Over the past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the second annual World Domination Summit in Portland, Oregon that Chris Guillebeau puts on for 1,000 passionate renegades living intentional lives that make the world better.
Jonathan Fields summarized it best when he called it “Woodstock for world changers“.
The conference had a huge impact on me last year and I’ve already writen about why you need to go to the World Domination Summit and what if real life was more like #WDS, so I won’t focus too much on the kind of people that are there or how inspring it is.
Instead, I’m going to focus on the most noteworthy part of the conference: the $100 Investment.
The Parable of the Talents
After J.D. Roth gave the last keynote speech on Sunday night and all the volunteers were thanked, Chris Guillebeau was on stage to end the event. But first, he had a story to tell.
Chris told a tale similar to the parable of the talents, where-in a man gives money to multiple people and returns later to see what they have done with it.
- Had they spent it needlessly?
- Saved it frugally?
- Or invested it wisely?
Chris then went on to share that while last year’s WDS didn’t make any profit, this year’s did. Plus, an anoynous donor gave a large sum of money to the conference’s cause as well.
Ironically, the surplus amount was close to $100 per attendee and with the launch of his recent book The $100 Startup, he came up with the idea of giving all 1,000 attendees $100 in cash to do with it as they wished.
I can’t imagine you’ve ever been to a conference where someone is giving $100,000 away for people to make an impact.
As Chris and I talked about when I had him on the Cubicle Renegade Podcast, with a small amount of money you can make a huge step towards making a difference when you harness the power of convergence between your passions and what people need (whether for profit or charity).
What Happens When You Give 1,000 People $100?
As I talked with people over the next day about “what they were going to do with the $100″ I felt people’s tone change to serious as they contemplated what they were going to do with it.
It was as if they were all harnessing both Voltaire and Spiderman’s Uncle Ben:
“With great power comes great responsibility.”
I saw people like Devon Mills donating her $100 towards Chantelle Baxter’s charity One Girl, that gives access to education to girls in Sierra Leone.
I gave my #wds2012 $100 bill to @chantellebaxter‘s wonderful @onegirlorg, but will come up with something cool to do with $100 of my own!
— Devon A. Mills (@devonamills) July 9, 2012
People were also tweeting that they were donating the $100 to charity: water. (More on that in a moment.)
And many others, including my wife, aren’t yet sure what they are planning to do with it.
One thing is certain though. Everyone I talked to is taking this $100 they were given seriously and are not wasting it like any other $100 they might have earned.
What I’m Going to Do With My $100 Investment from WDS
You might be asking, “Caleb, what are you going to do with the $100 Investment?” Well, here it is.
I’ll be using the $100 to create the first product for Pocket Changed: “Make It Rain: The No B.S. Guide to Your Money“.
Here is direcly what I’ll spend it on:
- Domain (JoinMakeItRain.com) = $9.95
- Bamboo Tablet = $86.56 (For “chalkboard” lessons like Pat Flynn does in this video.)
- That leaves $3.49 for a late night dose of caffeine the night before launch.
The “big picture” piece of this and how I’ll adhere to the “great responsibility” part of the investment is this:
25% of all revenue from Make It Rain will go directly to charity: water. A non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing countries.
I will be launching version 1.0 of the course (which is currently 0% complete) in two months in conjunction with my 26th birthday (September 9th, 2012). The fundraising campaign will then be open for an additional month till October 10th, 2012. The goal is to reach $5,000; enough to fully fund a well for a community village.
If you don’t want to wait two months to contribute you can head over to see the campaign at mycharitywater.org/pocketchanged if you want to get the ball rolling with another $26 donation. We only need 193 total $26 pledges to get a well built for 250 people.
If you haven’t heard of charity: water or the founder Scott Harrison’s story, check out this video. They give 100% of all donations directly to water projects for the nearly one billion people in the world that don’t have clean water.
So there you go. I hope you’ll join me in “making it rain”. Both in the tongue-in-cheek, learning to be financially successful way and in the helping to bring water infrastructure to those that need it most.
There will be more details coming in the next few weeks, but until then, be sure to sign up here to get notified of early access to Make It Rain.
Your Turn
To end, I have a simple question for you that I’d like to hear your answer to in the comments below.
- If you went to WDS, I’d love to hear what you are going to do with your $100 Investment. (Feel free to link to a blog post that describes it if you have written one.)
- If you didn’t go, how would you use $100 towards your own startup or world changing act?

Caleb, Go ahead - Make it rain.
I love this your golden idea and i see another big stuff coming forth from $100.
Chris is an awesome person I must tell you that.
Sheyi
Thanks Sheyi for the support. I appreciate it.
This is really powerful stuff Caleb. Not only that Chris had the genius idea to put his money where his mouth is (literally) thereby validating the $100 start-up even more, but also that you’ve decided to really document what you’re going to do with $100 and prove to everyone how possible it really is to make an impact with a few dollars and a lot of passion.
I appreciate the kind words Liz. I plan to really track the impact from this $100 as the only other “cost” associated with this will be my time.
More to come!
I didn’t find out about Chris or WDS until a few months ago (although I’ve been seriously blogging for about a year) so I was bummed when I found the tickets to the conference were already sold out. From the pictures, tweets and blog posts, it sounds like WDS is really changing lives! Next year, I am definitely not missing it.
I love what you’re doing with the $100 investment. Combining it with Charity Water is really smart, both good for business and good for others. Win-Win! On a side note: I too purchased the Bamboo tablet after seeing Pat’s video. I love the visual effect and how it can be combined into a helpful or educational video! Great stuff. Can’t wait to see how your projects work out!
You should try to make it next year Carrie. I am already looking forward to next year’s.
It took me a while to decide on the branding and purpose of my first product, but this weekend at WDS it just clicked. I’m excited to make charity: water a big part of the course and hope to see the Pocket Changed audience make a big impact in the world, with this just being the beginning.
Great writeup, Caleb!
So glad to have you with us for World Domination.
Thanks Chris. Glad to join you.
Caleb - I still have no idea what I’m going to do with the $100, but I’m trying to figure it out! There are a couple of things I’m doing this week with the number 100 (100 gratitudes, and 100 cards), but I’m still puzzling over the investment. Such responsibility!
Great write-up and GOOD LUCK with the project launch! I can’t wait to see it - I signed up!
Thanks for joining and donating to the charity: water campaign already. You’re kicking butt already with your Alcatraz naked swim fundraiser.
I still haven’t decided yet, either. Like Sarah, I feel so much responsibility and want to make this $100 into so much more. I’m not sure when it’ll be spent, but for now, as it sits on my desk, it’s motivating me to think deeply and plan about where and how it could be best used.
Love the tie-in with “Make It Rain” and charity: water. Can’t wait for monsoon season to start on September 9th!
Let me know what you decide to do with it. I’d love to hear.
“Monsoon season” made me laugh, haha.
Caleb,
Excellent post. I think it’s great what Chris has done. Very, very inspiring. I think you were right putting it into the business. $100 is a nice amount for charity, but using it for a project and pledging a % of the money is a great idea.
I wasn’t there. Maybe I will one day, but if I had to say what I’d use the $100 for, I’m not so sure. My dream one day is to share lucid dreaming with poor people around the world. People who have no money to drive cars, go to the beach, swim with dolphins, eat nice food. I want to teach them the can do it in their dreams, if only for a few hours each night. I had this massive plan to hire people to go round Africa etc, taking books and teaching others who in turn can teach their people. It will cost a lot more than $100 but I’ll probably put it into that.
Thanks for sharing what you’d do with it Jamie. I was thinking of just donating it, but I wanted to turn it into way more. I believe in the power of the Pocket Changed audience and I’m excited to see what kind of impact we can make in the coming months.
Amazing idea Caleb! Your passion and enthusiasm is just oozing from this idea! Can’t wait for “monsoon” season.
B
Thanks Blair.
Wow,
This is just awesome on so many levels. I had no idea that Chris gave away $100 to every participant. I read the post a few hours ago but all morning I have been thinking about two things
1. What would I do with $100?
2. What it says about a person when they give away $100,000?
I wish I could give you some super awesome brilliant idea. But I can’t. I would want to make it powerful. As you clearly have.
I would definitely want to use it to develop a product. I already have developed a 30 day course to help people achieve big goals. It has taken a ton of time to put it together but it didn’t cost me any money since I already had all the technology.
I love that you are using your $100 to develop the first course for pocket changed. And on top of that you are giving 25% to charity. Wow. I think I will follow this same model once I begin to charge people for enrollment in my online courses.
Very cool Caleb.
25% is the least I could do. I want to show how serious I am about making an impact and not just doing a token 10% for appearance. Thanks for the encouragement Izzy.
Caleb, use some of the info in those EBK lessons to Make it Rain! Hope all is well. Good luck on your product launch.
Thanks Scott.
I’m really looking forward to what everyone does with their $100. I haven’t decided yet, although there are three local charities I work with, so I may create a project with them, or perhaps something completely different. The idea of someone investing money in me and being held accountable by 1,000 other people is a huge driver to really go out and make a difference, though. Good luck with your plan, and I will see you next year!
Hey Erin,
Thanks for commenting.
I’d love to hear what you decide on doing with the $100 when you figure it out.
Love this! I haven’t decided what to do with my $100 yet… Glad Chris posted this link, because it helped me find your blog!
Cheers,
@alexisgrant
Fantastic Alexis. Glad you found it as well.
Feel free to post here what you decide to do with yours.
I didn’t go to WDS and am regretting it more and more! There must have been some INCREDIBLE conversations going on that day. What a great way to get a room full of people thinking!
I like your idea, good luck!
As for my idea? Still hammering out the final pieces, but I think it has potential *grin*
Hey Alex,
It was another great conference. You could try to see if there is a “post-WDS” meet-up happening in Toronto.
Caleb,
You’ve put me into same thoughtful mood as Chris put you guys. I’m going to go away and seriously think about how I’m going to most of my $100.
That’s great Dolly. I’d love to hear what you are going to do with it when you decide.
I love this concept, and I love what everyone you mentioned (yourself included) decided to do with their $100! Great idea.
Thanks Kristin. This is the first I’ve seen your site as well and I love the design + message of it!
Hi Caleb, I think this is a great idea.
It’s awesome how Chris inspired a so big and powerful movement.
I hope I can be at the World Domination Summit 2013, I believe it’s very inspiring.
About your question on the 100$…I would use them to take a big whiteboard for a video course that I planned few weeks ago.
Given that I don’t have that 100$ I’ll buy the whiteboard by my own
Great Mauro. Very similar to my use, but mine is the “techy” version.
I just learned about the $100 he gave out to attendees from this post and I must say that is absolutely awesome. I’d love to see the results a year later of what everyone did with their money.
Good luck with your project here, I subscribed for updates
I’m looking forward to seeing the results a year later as well. I know they are trying to track the uses as much as possible, so I’m sure there will be more to come on that front.
